Version of Puppet in Debian Etch: 0.20.1-1

Version of Puppet in Backports: puppet (0.24.4-8~bpo40+1)

Current Version of Puppet from GIT: 0.24.6 which includes a huge number of feature upgrades and bug fixes over the BPO version (http://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/UPGRADE).

So in short, I install from source because it provides more features.

I take your point about the automatic updates, however if you're subscribed to the puppet mailing list, new releases and patches are announced and it's simply a case of checking out the code and re-running the install steps.

If I had the time I'd offer to help maintain the packages, but I dont and I need the features in 0.25+ so I patch the software myself.

Why would you want to install from source? You are not changing anything in the app, you are not really learning anything, so there is no point really...

Installing from source in this case has many disadvantages, but the most important is that you lose the benefit of automatic *security* updates.

ar-lock,

I agree completely, where possible the package should be used, however sometimes you need features that aren't compiled into the package, other times it's easier to install from source than perform a dist-upgrade!

Thanks for visiting,

Matt.

In debian, its better practice to install the debian package, as opposed to compiling from source.

there is a package for nagios2 in the repository and currently you can find an Intrepid backport in the ppa's ...

soon nagios 3 will be in the repository.

Glad to hear it worked.

I've noticed on a few systems recently that make doesn't get installed by default when you install build-essential, I've updated the post to reflect this.

This worked perfectly, I had to install the 'make' package (big deal) ... I'm a debian 'noob' and managed to get this all running with no issues.

THANKYOU!

The basics would be as follows:

1) Get a Virtual Private Server somewhere that has data-laws that do not permit spying.

2) install OpenVPN Server ( http://www.openvpn.net/ ) onto that server

3) Install the client onto your laptop/desktop

4) Configure the OpenVPN connection to be the default route

--- for the really paranoid ---

Take out a 3G PAYG data subscription (http://www.three.co.uk/personal/products_services_/mobile_broadband_/price_plans_payg.omp) and use this with a laptop - One of the main reasons that the BBC aren't allowed to provide Olympic coverage over mobile-broadband links is because the IOC can't be sure where the stream is going to (the BBC are only allowed to broadcast the event within the UK)

I'm putting together a list of facilities and software that can be used to retain our privacy

Haven Co looks like a business for businesses.

PF is interested in protecting privacy of individuals.

I don't know anything about this but am interested. Somebody mentioned VPN to Russia - I know enough to know that this sounds feasible but wouldn't have a clue where to start.
